August 27, 2016 | In honor of Thomas Heyward Jr. and his fellow Patriots | A reenactment presented by The Charleston Museum, Powder Magazine and Old Exchange Building | British soldiers erected their flag at the Powder Magazine and read aloud the proclamation for the arrest of Thomas Heyward, Jr. | British soldiers then walked to the Heyward-Washington House on Church Street | Colonial dressed activists, including his wife, protested as Mr. Heyward was taken from his home the escorted to the steps of the Exchange Building
August 27, 1780 | Thomas Heyward Jr. | Signer of the Declaration of Independence | Was taken from his Charles Town home on Church Street | By British troops | Then detained in the Old Exchange Building | After being arrested, he and twenty-eight other “Ringleaders of the Rebellion” were relocated to a guard ship in the Charleston Harbor | September 4, all were transported to St. Augustine, Florida | Remaining there for about eleven months until freed in a prisoner exchange.
