BATTERY PLAYER TRAILS
"The Charleston Battery’s final open tryout before the start of 2016 season will kick off at 11 a.m. on Friday at MUSC Health Stadium, with participants beginning their sign-ins at 10 a.m.
Trialists and returning/previous Battery players will break into teams and participate in small-sided games during the morning session. Players will return from a lunch break around 3 p.m. and play 11v11.
Saturday’s session begins at 10 a.m., with no break, and will conclude once all 11v11 matches have completed.
Battery General Manager and Coach Mike Anhaeuser spotted “four or five” prospects at the January Player Trial, and hopes to get similar quality from February’s tryout. The top performers from this weekend’s event are competing for a place in the club’s Invitation Camp, which begins on Friday, Feb. 12.
Invitation Camp is usually the first look at the most heavily scouted players on the Battery’s pre-season radar, but multiple players from open tryouts have gone into the invitational setting and proved their worth. The most recent example — current Arizona United forward Jose Cuevas — went from trialist to 2012 USL Pro Rookie of the Year.
